  Raman Thediya Seethai

Cheran, Vimala Raman

When it concerns food, if the food item in hand does not reach the mouth, one can manage. But if the same thing applies when going to see a prospective bride, one can imagine the mental state of the bridegroom in question. This sentiment has been made into a sensitive screenplay by director Jagannath.

Cheran who makes wedding invitations for everybody, himself has a problem in getting a bride. Like a person not finding a place in a game of musical chairs, in each instance Cheran faces defeat and it takes a toll on his emotions.

When he goes to see a prospective bride, he finds himself in an unenviable situation where he meets girls who had earlier turned him down. Does Cheran finally find his bride? The climax gives the answer to this question.

We are so used to seeing heroes drooling over every female they meet, that it is refreshing to see a hero who is turned down by women under various circumstances, but he still lends a helping hand to them under different situations. Depicted without coarseness, one should laud director Jagannath for his sensitive handling of the subject.

By not deviating from the story line and trying to show heroism, Cheran's acting is realistic and commendable. In scenes where he is speechless when overcome with emotion, his expressions speak for him and surely the audience identify with him in these situations.

Pasupathy, Gajala

The next day is his marriage to Ramya Nambisan, but the bride elopes with her lover. In another context, Cheran meets Ramya as a poor, pregnant woman. He visits her humble abode and the wistful 'look' he gives when turning back to bid her farewell speaks volumes.

Pasupathy as the confident radio announcer is a character one can 'see' again and again. When he says "Vanakkam, this is Nedumaran speaking," we also lose ourselves just like Gajala does. Pasupathy's acting and body language shows how hard he has worked on his characterization.

Though it's a bit cinematic, one can still enjoy the track with Nitin Sathya. He suits very well, the sly character who steals Karthika's heart. For having won the race, he thanks the police station much to the amusement of the audience.

Vimala Raman impresses as one who had once turned down Cheran, but now yearns to live with him. Not knowing that Cheran is the suitor who had come to see her, Navia Nair embroils him in a lathi charge. Navia has a guest role but she has used it to her best advantage.

Vidya Sagar is good in music and background score. Rajesh Yadav should be saluted for cinematography that does not hurt the eyes.

Kudos to director Jagannath for his evenly paced screenplay and for not misusing and exploiting the presence of 5 beautiful heroines into something commercial.

'Raman Thediya Seethai' is wholesome.
